Generalizing solubility parameter theory to apply to one and two-dimensional solutes and to incorporate dipolar interactions

چکیده
Hildebrand and Hansen solubility parameters are commonly used to identify suitable solvents for the dispersion or dissolution of a range of solutes, from small molecules to graphene. This practice is based on a number of equations which predict the enthalpy of mixing to be minimized when the solubility parameters of solvent and solute match. However, such equations have only been rigorously derived for mixtures of small molecules which interact only via dispersive forces. Here we derive a general expression for the enthalpy of mixing in terms of the dimensionality of the solute where small molecules are considered zero dimensional, materials such as polymers or nanotubes are one-dimensional and platelets such as graphene are two-dimensional. We explicitly include contributions due to dispersive, dipole-dipole and dipole-induced dipole interactions. We find equations very similar to those of Hildebrand and Hansen so long as the solubility parameters of the solute are defined in a manner which reflects their dimensionality. In addition, the equations for 1D and 2D systems are equivalent to known expressions for the enthalpy of mixing of rods and platelets respectively as a function of surface energy. This agreement between our expressions and those commonly used shows that the concept of solubility parameters can be rigorously applied to extended solutes such as polymers, nanotubes and graphene.

Density and Polarization Profiles of Dipolar Hard Ellipsoids Confined between Hard Walls: A Density Functional Theory Approach
The density and polarization profiles of the dipolar hard ellipsoids confined between hard walls are studied using the density functional theory (DFT). The Hyper-Netted Chain (HNC) approximation is used to write excess grand potential of the system with respect to the bulk value. The number density is expanded up to zero and first order in polarization to find the results. For the zero order in...

The Extended Hildebrand Solubility Parameter Approach (EHSA) is used to estimate the solubility of satranidazole in binary solvent systems. The solubility of satranidazole in various water-PEG 400 mixtures was analyzed in terms of solute-solvent interactions using a modified version of Hildebrand-Scatchard treatment for regular solutions. The solubility equation employs term interaction ...

In this paper, static analysis of functionally graded annular plate resting on elastic foundation with various boundary conditions is carried out by using a semi-analytical approach (SSM-DQM). The differential governing equations are presented based on the three dimensional theory of elasticity. The plate is assumed isotropic at any point, while material properties to vary exponentially thro...

A theoretical study analyzing three-dimensional combustion acoustic instabilities in a liquid propellant rocket engine combustor has been conducted. A linear theory based on Crocco’s pressure sensitive time lag model is used. To apply this theory the combustor is divided into two main components, including the combustion chamber and the converging part of the nozzle. The assumption of concentra...
